Bandai Namco has confirmed that a new Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi game is in development, which comes over 15 years since the franchise’s last mainline title.

Revealed this Sunday at the Dragon Ball Games Battle Hour 2023, the announcement was coupled with a brief teaser trailer showing glimpses of the previous titles in the series, followed by the appearance of Goku in his Super Saiyan Blue form.

Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi was first released on PlayStation 2 in 2005, followed by two swift sequels released in the following two years – on the PS2 and Wii.

While the game received some fun spinoffs – including Tenkaichi Tag Team in 2010 for the PlayStation Portable, the mainline games have not seen a new addition for some time.

While the trailer does not indicate whether the new entry will be Budokai Tenkaichi 4 or another spinoff for the series, the Goku model does make it seem like the game will feature some great graphics – indicating that it will at least be coming to the next-gen consoles.

The Budokai Tenkaichi series was more about a huge roster of playable characters along with multiple transformations but often failed to distinguish themselves from their predecessors.

That said, who doesn’t love a good slugfest with dynamic camera angles.
