The third season of Bungo Stray Dogs arrived all the way back in 2019. After years of anticipation, the series is set to return with a fourth season in January 2023. Based on the manga of the same name by Kafka Asagiri, the series draws inspiration from famous writers, granting them unique superpowers.

The show’s first season was split into two halves, airing in 2016, followed by an anime film titled Bungo Stray Dogs: Dead Apple in 2018. This was followed by the third season in 2019.

The first three seasons of Bungo Stray Dogs were awarded for their fine character designs, direction, and screenplay. The final episode of the third season left several scenarios to the fans’ anticipation. For instance, what happens to Fyodor? What will be his next move? Or the suggested clash between Atsushi and Akutagawa, scheduled after the next 6 months. It has been a long wait since then for the continuation of the anime.

What Bungo Stray Dogs Season 4 Will Be About

Set in late 19th century England, the story is about Enola Holmes, the younger sister of the esteemed Sherlock Holmes. Henry Cavill reprises his role as Arthur Conan Doyle’s enigmatic detective in the sequel. In line with the setting of the movie, Enola struggles to cope with the social stigma associated with women, especially if she is looking to establish herself as a private investigator.

The fourth season picks things up right where the previous season left off, with the “Decay of the Angel” saga. The final five episodes of season 3 adapted the Cannibalism arc, where a new criminal organization named the Rats in the House of the Dead makes its debut. The syndicate is headed by the mysterious Fyodor Dostoevsky, who will be receiving more attention in the fourth season.

After the appearance of the organization, the president of the Armed Detective Agency and the Port Mafia’s leader, Yukichi Fukuzawa and Ogai Mori respectively, are attacked and left infected with a virus called Cannibalism.

The virus destroys the organs of its host within 48 hours of exposure unless one of them dies within the time limit. To save their leaders, both groups begin their race against time. The story ends with the holder of the virus ability being captured by the two organizations, requesting to be spared in exchange for saving their respective leaders.

The fourth season will start with the Cannibalism Aftermath Arc.

What You Need To Know About The Anime

The plot is centered around a boy named Atsushi Nakajima, an orphan who discovers his ability to transform into a giant white tiger under the moonlight. After being expelled from the orphanage, Atsushi encounters Osamu Dazai, who recruits him into the Armed Detective Agency.

Working in the agency with other gifted individuals, he meets several other ability users and discovers the extent of his own powers, all to protect the city of Yokohama.

The anime will be produced by studio Bones under the direction of Takuya Igarashi (Soul Eater). Much of the main cast will be returning this season. Yuuto Uemura (Thorfinn, Vinland Saga) will be voicing Atsushi, and Mamoru Miyano returns as Osamu Dazai (Gamma, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero).

Since the past three seasons consisted of 12 episodes each, the same can be expected of the fourth. Crunchyroll will be airing the anime in Japan.
