After waiting for 2 years, we finally have news regarding the return of Haikyuu. The official website of Haikyuu confirmed the anime’s return with a two-part movie titled: “Haikyuu!! FINAL”. As the title suggests, this may be the last we see of the beloved sports series. If you have not read the manga yet, get prepared for some more high-octane volleyball matches the series is known for.

Since its debut in February 2012, Haikyuu has been one of the most popular anime in the world. It was ranked second in the “Top Anime” category on Tumblr’s 2020 Year in Review, as well as Crunchyroll’s list of the best anime of the 2010s.

On August 13, Kaito Ishikawa, the voice behind Tobio Kageyama, tweeted –
“The FINAL has been decided! I am faced with an emotional dilemma by the joy of seeing the continuation and the beginning of a season that will never be repeated. I will face Kageyama and Karasuno in the recording!”

In addition, a teaser trailer for the movie has been released on TOHO animation’s YouTube page. The teaser shows Hinata reminiscing about his journey to the Nationals, showing some of the highlights from the show.

The trailer ends with visuals for the battle between Karasuno and Nekoma, and Hinata’s encounter with the new “Little Giant”. With the original manga ending in 2020, we have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of the final story.

Haikyuu Final Has Some High Expectations To Live Up To

Fans were expecting another couple of seasons before the anime came to an end. With the announcement of a movie, the response has been somewhat bittersweet. Many find it hard to believe that the movie could do justice to the Karasuno vs Nekoma match, which was spread across several chapters in the manga.

Those who are familiar with anime realize how it makes the story highly engaging by focusing on each important character’s back story, and how crucial a role they play in a match. Haikyuu is known for conveying each character’s state of mind before making key plays.

Despite this, it would be hard to keep viewers from watching the animation. With the movie finishing the story spanning over 10 years, it has high expectations to live up to.

What Is Haikyuu About?

VIZ Manga describes the story as follows –

Ever since he saw the legendary player known as “the Little Giant” compete at the national volleyball finals, Shoyo Hinata has been aiming to be the best volleyball player ever! Who says you need to be tall to play volleyball when you can jump higher than anyone else?

The story follows Hinata Shoyo, a young middle-schooler of short stature. Hinata develops a love for volleyball when he glances at a national volleyball tournament.

Hinata is inspired by another player from Karasuno High School called “The Little Giant”, displaying unmatched skill on the court despite his short stature.

Hinata is a gifted athlete, which compensates for his lack of experience in volleyball. In his final year of middle school, Hinata experiences his first defeat playing against Tobio Kageyama, leaving a sour taste in his mouth.

Following the tournament, Hinata enrolls in Karasuno High School and joins their volleyball club, but to his dismay, the club now has a foul reputation as the “Flightless Crows”. He then encounters Kageyama, who himself has enrolled in the school, giving rise to the dynamic duo of high-school volleyball.
