Is There Going To Be a John Wick 5?

It’s tough to one-up previous installments of an action franchise that is, by most people’s standards (and mine), the best action film franchise of all time. With John Wick: Chapter 4, the duo of Keanu Reeves and Chad Stahelski have managed to do just that.

The obscene brutality of the John Wick franchise appeals to one of the most basic human emotions, but the fourth installment of the franchise is so much more. It gets you to peer beyond the slaughter fest — depicting a more humane side of the “Baba Yaga.”

And spoiler alert, but if you’ve seen the movie, then yes, John Wick is dead. The assassin was shown buried six feet under beside his wife at the end of the movie. This may come as a bit of a surprise for many since Wick has sustained inhumane amounts of bashings — with head blows, gunshots, and falling from obscene heights throughout the series.

The final scene of John Wick 4 (we’re not talking about the post-credits scene just yet) shows Winston and the Bowery King standing in from of John Wick’s tombstone — but this should be taken with a grain of salt.

The legendary assassin is notorious for being hard to kill, and had already escaped death once at the end of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, where he eventually recuperated underground leading up to the events of Chapter 4.

John Wick Will Not Rest In Peace Just Yet.

John Wick has been Lionsgate’s premiere franchise, and the studio is not looking to let go of the series anytime soon. Back in August 2020, CEO Jon Feltheimer announced that a 5th installment of John Wick was already in the works — this was before Chapter 4 had even begun filming.

Despite the studio’s interests, Chad Stahelski has been pretty vocal about him and Reeves being “done for the moment,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. However, the director also added that a 5th film was not completely off the books, stating “If everyone loves it [John Wick 4] and it goes kooky, then we’ll take a quiet minute.”

And it certainly has. The movie has performed splendidly at the box office, making $245 million in just 10 days since its release — now eyeing the lifetime earnings ($327 million) of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.

Seeing its performance, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair revealed that the studio is “not ready to say goodbye to Keanu with this franchise,” adding that they’re looking for “alternatives” to keep Reeves attached to the franchise.

Keanu Reeves himself has noted that he would “never say never” to a fifth appearance, but adds that he truly wants the character to find peace — something he believes they achieved by the fourth installment.

Ballerina, The Continental, and Other Spinoffs to John Wick.

Reeves has already confirmed that he will be appearing in the spinoff “Ballerina” starring Ana de Armas — who will be reprising her role as an assassin last seen in Chapter 3. The appearance will not be a simple cameo either, confirmed the movie’s co-writer Shay Hatten.

The series is scheduled to release sometime in 2024, and will also feature Ian McShane and Lance Reddick from the franchise, being one of Reddick’s final film appearances before his death.

While we don’t know what other characters from the John Wick franchise will appear in Ballerina, we do have details on another spinoff.

A TV series titled “The Continental” is set to premiere in late 2023, and will tell the story of how a young Winston Scott (played by Colin Woodell) came to his position as the proprietor of the hotel.

While I loved Chapter 4, the movie did spoil one long-standing expectation for me — a crossover between Bob Odenkirk’s Nobody and John Wick — courtesy of the appearance of their own version of a “Mr. Nobody.” Despite this fact, the post-credits scene of the movie teased yet another future spinoff.

Donnie Yen’s Caine was a fabulous adversary to John Wick in Chapter 4, but the blind assassin’s deeds come back to stab him at the end of the movie. As the now-free Caine seeks to reunite with his daughter, he is approached by Akira (Rina Sawayama), whose father he killed in the first half of the movie.

While there’s no indication of what happened afterward, this could be an indication that a future series with Donnie Yen, or even Rina Sawayama might be on the horizon.

Donnie Yen has also shown interest in a potential spinoff, stating he’d “love to do a ‘John Wick’ spinoff Centered around Caine.”

John Wick 4 Really Brought Things Full Circle.

I have been a fan of the John Wick films since day one, and would love to see the assassin return — yet I can’t help but hope that the character gets the rest he deserves.

While things may have begun with the idea of avenging his dog, Wick’s astounding killstreak showed that perhaps the character was looking for something more, all the while grieving for his wife’s death. It was when Wick saves Nobody’s dog from being shot that things seem like they’ve been brought full circle — and it was the first time I realized that this may really be the end.

While Hollywood is not stranger to the idea of bringing back characters from the dead for just another sequel, Reeves’ character was shown to get what he set out to seek in the first film. This makes formulating the idea of his return a weird path.
