Maybe it took an online petition, but the hit manhwa Solo Leveling will be getting an anime adaptation in 2023. The manhwa had a 4-year long journey and eventually ended in December 2021 with 179 chapters that had the fans hooting for the webtoon to be adapted into an anime. Here’s what you need to know about the upcoming Solo Leveling anime.

The Solo Leveling Anime Is Still Under Production

During the Aniplex Online Fest 2022, it was announced that Solo Leveling will be produced by A-1 Productions, a subsidiary of Aniplex. The studio is most notably known for Sword Art Online & Kaguya-sama: Love is War, and the fans have high hopes for the quality of the anime.

Shunsuke Nakashige will be serving as the director, With Noboru Kimura as the head writer and Tomoko Sudo (Nanatsu no Taizai) as the head of character design. Fans also got a glimpse of early artwork design for Sung Jinwoo – the protagonist of the series.

Expectations are also set high for the anime’s music, which will be produced by Hiroyuki Sawano, the man behind Attack on Titan’s excellent background score.

The main cast of the show remains to be announced, as does the precise release date.

Early character designs for the protagonist, Sung Jin-Woo, seem nothing less than phenomenal. Fans hope that the studio can bring the webtoon’s high-octane action sequences to their full glory, as they did with Sword Art Online.

A Manhwa Ready To Binge

Crunchyroll announced in July that Solo Leveling would be produced, releasing a trailer featuring key moments from the webtoon, including the protagonist’s rise to power. Sadly, the artist of the manhwa – Dubu, passed away this past July sometime after the announcement.

Its story is set in a universe where monsters emerge from portals called Gates, and a few selected humans have awakened special powers to be known as Hunters, who are ranked based on their skill.

The plot revolves around one such Hunter, Sung Jinwoo, ranked the weakest hunter in the world. On one of his delves into a Dungeon, Jinwoo somehow gets trapped in a mysterious location, with most of his party being murdered. Being on the verge of dying himself, the hunter suddenly receives a notification saying he has become a “player”, which is just the beginning of his journey.

The Solo Leveling manhwa published its final chapter on December 29, 2021, ending the series with a total of 179 chapters. Written by Chugong, Solo Leveling launched in 2016, with its Korean release recording nearly 50 million views to date.

The Solo Leveling anime is set to premiere sometime in 2023.
