The ophiocordyceps fungus isn’t done haunting what’s left of humanity, as HBO’s high-profile post-apocalyptic thriller “The Last of Us” preps for its second season. There’s much more to Joel and Ellie’s road trip than what nine episodes could encapsulate, and after its critical and commercial success, subsequent seasons are a no-brainer.

Based on the Naughty Dog video game of the same name, “The Last of Us” season one adapted the first of the two-part video game series. The upcoming season 2 will focus on the story of “The Last of Us Part II.” Here’s what you need to know about the upcoming season.

WHEN WILL THE LAST OF US SEASON 2 RELEASE, AND WILL THERE BE MORE?

While development of the show’s second season was halted due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, HBO head Casey Bloys has since announced that “The Last of Us” season 2 will enter production in early 2024, eyeing a 2025 release at the earliest.

Series star Bella Ramsey has also given an unofficial timeline on when you could expect the series, suggesting that “It’ll probably be the end of 2024, early 2025.”

As for the ending, it’s highly likely that HBO has plans for over 2 seasons, especially since the second game is significantly larger than the first — something showrunner Craig Mazin himself has acknowledged.

Obviously there’s a lot more story to tell that exists. The second game is much bigger than the first, the amount of story there is much larger.

So the positive thing is it’s not like, oh, there’s just one more season. I think that there is more than one more season to do.

HBO has usually spaced out different seasons of its prominent shows 2-3 years apart, and the same could be expected from a potential third season for “The Last of Us” — which means that you could expect it in 2027 at the earliest.

HOW MUCH OF “THE LAST OF US PART II” WILL SEASON 2 COVER?

“The Last of Us Part II” involves a time skip — taking place a few years after the events of the first game, and the same can be expected from the TV series. The second game also involves perspective shifts and flashbacks, which means there’s some creative freedom over how HBO plans to adapt it. All we know for now is that it involves “more than one season.”

WHAT WILL SEASON 2 BE ABOUT?

The first season is about the world being shelled behind walls over the fear of “fast zombies“. It revolves around the surrogate father-daughter bond that develops between Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsay) as they travel through post-apocalyptic settlements seeking solace.

Dissimilar to the heartwarming backdrop of the initial season, the second season of “The Last of Us” will likely explore the fallout from Joel’s actions by the end of season one — how he has done horrible things to survive this apocalypse.

The first big teaser about the second season came via Druckmann’s X post — featuring someone’s [human] arm holding a hammer. People who have played through the video game quickly identified the hand as Abby’s, one of the key characters in “The Last of Us Part II.” As for who will be playing Abby, the internet is still debating over it. ❑
