The news of a prequel to Stranger Things has been floating around for some time now, and we finally have official confirmation.

Titled Stranger Things: The First Shadow, the prequel is an origin story of sorts for Vecna – the main antagonist from the fourth season of the series. And before you save the dates to catch the premiere of the show, there’s a catch – it’s a stage play taking place in London.

Set to premiere at the Phoenix Theatre in London’s West End, the stage play will be starting in late 2023, with tickets going on sale this spring.

THE STRANGER THINGS UNIVERSE WAS BOUND TO EXPAND

With the wildly popular cultural phenomenon that Stranger Things has become, it’s no surprise that Netflix would want to create an entire universe for the series.

The play is based on an original story by series creators Duffer Brothers, who will also be serving as executive producers.

The story will follow a younger version of Hopper and Joyce, set in a time “before the world turned upside down,” seemingly indicating that the series will shine more light on how Hawkins got intertwined with the parallel reality.

Here’s the official synopsis for the prequel:

Hawkins, 1959: a regular town with regular worries. Young Jim Hopper’s car won’t start, Bob Newby’s sister won’t take his radio show seriously and Joyce Maldonado just wants to graduate and get the hell out of town. When new student Henry Creel arrives, his family finds that a fresh start isn’t so easy… and the shadows of the past have a very long reach.

Brought to life by a multi-award-winning creative team, who take theatrical storytelling and stagecraft to a whole new dimension, this gripping new adventure will take you right back to the beginning of the Stranger Things story – and may hold the key to the end.

Aside from a promotional visual showing a young boy (presumably Vecna’s young, human self) facing the shadow of Vecna, Netflix has not released any promotional material for the series.

The Duffer Brothers stated that the spinoff series will not be about Millie Bobby Brown’s Eleven and that it will be “1000% different” from the original series.

As the fourth season of Stranger Things did not completely get rid of Vecna, chances are that the play may reveal some important facts about the character – which may even come into play during the final season. You can currently sign up for priority access to the tickets here.

Aside from the original series, Netflix has not made any official statement regarding the release of season 5.

Series star Noah Schnapp (Will) recently revealed that he will be shooting for the series this May, which means that the series will premiere in late 2023 at the earliest.
